Algerian parliament to review fuel price changes

A finance committee proposed that parliament must approve any fuel price adjustments for 2027.

Algeria's National People's Assembly finance committee has proposed 26 amendments to the 2027 finance bill, including a rule requiring parliamentary approval for any changes to fuel prices. The committee also suggested customs and tax breaks for Algerians living abroad who wish to return home permanently, and extended building settlement deadlines to the end of 2027.

Committee rapporteur Bouchecha explained that the proposed amendments, which include linguistic corrections and new articles, aim to increase transparency and protect citizens' purchasing power. Article 218, as amended, would make fuel price reviews conditional on parliamentary consent within the finance law framework.

The committee also proposed a new article offering special facilities for Algerian expatriates residing abroad for at least three consecutive years who wish to return permanently. These individuals would be allowed to import equipment related to their economic or professional activities, exempt from foreign trade and exchange controls, as well as customs duties and fees.

Why it mattersAlgerian citizens will have their parliament involved in decisions affecting fuel prices.
