Egypt central bank raises interest rates by 1%

The Monetary Policy Committee increased key rates to combat inflation and currency pressures.

The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) unexpectedly raised its key interest rates by 1 percentage point on Thursday. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) increased the overnight deposit rate to 20.0 percent, the overnight lending rate to 21.0 percent, and the main operation rate to 20.5 percent. The credit and discount rate also moved to 20.5 percent.

Banking expert Hany Aboul Fotouh stated the decision reflects concerns over inflation and global economic shifts. He noted the US dollar approaching EGP 56 as a catalyst for currency pressure, which risks increasing costs for imported goods and production inputs. The CBE aims to preserve local debt appeal and reduce money outflows.

Geopolitical tensions add to market uncertainty, potentially disrupting energy markets and supply chains. The central bank stated the tighter monetary policy targets rising food and energy costs to protect domestic purchasing power in a difficult global economy.
