Egypt water ministry denies Sinai dam collapse reports

Viral social media claims of floodwaters breaching Nuweiba dams are false, officials state.

Egyptian water officials have dismissed social media reports claiming flood protection dams in Nuweiba, South Sinai, failed during recent storms. The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation confirmed on November 6, 2026, that all primary dams successfully contained massive rainwater surges. Viral images of eroded ground were clarified to show damage near a coastal bridge support, not dam infrastructure.

While primary dams remained intact, localized secondary barriers sustained damage. A concrete barrier 300 meters from the asphalt and a gabion barrier 600 meters out require substantial maintenance. A third barrier near the Arab Hamdan area is undergoing technical evaluation for necessary repairs. The flood defense system in Wadi Watir basin captured approximately 13 million cubic meters of rainwater during the October 27 downpour.

The ministry has invested LE 660 million in the Wadi Watir basin's infrastructure, which includes 14 dams and 6 lakes. A LE 10 billion expansion plan is set to increase the total capture capacity to 76.37 million cubic meters. This future phase includes 9 new dams and 15 lakes, with work commencing after joint committees audit regional water structures.

Why it mattersResidents of South Sinai and travelers on the Sharm El-Sheikh–Taba highway are assured that critical flood protection infrastructure remains operational despite damage to secondary barriers.
