dilapidated classroom forces wuling pupils to study under trees
a 1990 mud-built block at wuling m/a basic school has developed deep cracks, forcing lessons outdoors.
Pupils at Wuling M/A Basic School in Ghana's Upper West Region are studying under trees because their three-unit classroom block is dilapidated. The mud-built structure, constructed in 1990, has deep cracks and is considered unsafe by school authorities. This forces lower primary classes and kindergarten pupils, who have never had a dedicated facility, to learn outdoors.
Head Teacher Mr Alfred Mwin-ire Ileku stated that rainfall and heat frequently interrupt lessons, sometimes leading to cancellations. He noted that appeals to the Jirapa Municipal Education Directorate have not yet resulted in action. The school has 254 pupils and only 10 teachers, with just two handling the entire Junior High School department.
The Assembly Member for the Tuggo Electoral Area, Mr Paul Bamaaka, has petitioned the Jirapa Municipal Assembly multiple times regarding the school's infrastructure. He is awaiting a response and has appealed for support from corporate organisations and individuals to build a suitable classroom block.
Why it mattersChildren in the Jirapa Municipality are forced to learn outdoors due to a collapsing classroom, exposing them to harsh weather and distractions.
