Five inmates were transferred from Nsawam Prison after an alleged plot to poison politician Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi. A senior aide, Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, said the plot was discovered when someone overheard inmates discussing plans to poison the former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman. Mr Wontumi informed his aide about the threat after a court appearance on Tuesday, October 27.
Dr Boakye-Danquah visited the prison over the weekend and confirmed the incident with the officer in charge, who assured him investigations were underway. A committee has been set up to probe the alleged plot, and the five inmates have been moved to a different cell. The aide stated that Mr Wontumi remained calm and unafraid despite the alleged threat to his safety.
The disclosure comes as Mr Wontumi marks 100 days in prison. Dr Boakye-Danquah planned to visit the Nsawam Prison again on Wednesday morning to check on Mr Wontumi's welfare. The aide expressed confidence that the alleged plot would not succeed.
