Ghana health minister targets 2027 for La General Hospital completion

Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh visited the €50 million project site on October 29, 2026.

The La General Hospital project in Ghana is now expected to finish by the end of 2027, according to Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. The €50 million project has seen approximately €15 million paid so far, with the contractor urged to accelerate work. Minister Akandoh visited the construction site on Thursday, October 29, 2026, to assess progress.

The Minister stated that delayed payments cannot be an excuse for slow progress, as the government has processed the latest interim payment certificate. He noted that the project cost covers both construction and hospital equipment, with further payments tied to installation. The Minister stressed the importance of prioritising the hospital’s emergency unit to address patient turn-away issues.

Minister Akandoh cited Korle Bu Teaching Hospital's limited emergency beds compared to its total capacity as an example of a wider need. He emphasized that health facilities must plan for emergency cases, especially with Ghana's growing population. The government aims to improve emergency care in both new and existing facilities.

Why it mattersGhanaian residents will benefit from improved emergency healthcare services and increased hospital capacity upon the project's completion.
