NIA arrests six staff over Ghana Card extortion

Seven other employees had their appointments terminated for knowing about the alleged misconduct.

The National Identification Authority (NIA) arrested six staff members and dismissed seven others for allegedly demanding money during the free Ghana Card registration for children aged six to 14 at Galaka in the Upper East Region. The officials reportedly asked parents for payment before registering their children. The NIA announced these actions in a statement on Thursday, October 29.

The six arrested staff were identified by parents and handed over to the Bawku West District Police, where they are assisting investigations. An internal review led to the dismissal of seven other team members who knew about the alleged extortion but did not report it. The NIA stated that registration must follow approved procedures and no unauthorised payments are allowed.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, warning that misconduct will face disciplinary sanctions. The NIA encouraged the public to report any suspected wrongdoing by registration officials through its official channels. The statement was signed by Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, Head of the Corporate Affairs Directorate.
