Teacher Alleges Widespread School Sexual Misconduct in Ghana

Stephen Desu claims that almost every school nationwide has one or two educators involved in predatory behavior.

A teacher at Ekumpoano Catholic Basic School, Stephen Desu, has alleged that sexual misconduct by educators is widespread across schools in Ghana. Speaking on Joy News on Tuesday, October 20, he claimed that almost every school has one or two staff members engaged in such behavior, warning that the issue spans primary, junior high, and senior high levels.

The remarks follow an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving female students at Obuasi Senior High Technical School. Following reports by investigative correspondent Manasseh Azure Awuni, the Ghana Education Service interdicted headmaster Zakaria Abdulai, and police arrested him. The allegations against Mr Abdulai have not yet been established in court.

Mr Desu blamed the Ghana Education Service for failing to deal decisively with misconduct, arguing that a lack of punishment allows such actions to fester. Education authorities will need to establish the extent of the problem through formal investigations, as the widespread claims remain unsubstantiated.

Why it mattersStudents and school administrators across Ghana are affected by institutional responses to allegations of sexual misconduct.
