EU deploys 16 observers for Gambia election

The European Union Election Observation Mission will monitor the December 5, 2026 presidential polls.

16 long-term observers from the European Union have been deployed across The Gambia to monitor the December 5, 2026 presidential election. The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) announced the deployment on Thursday, November 5, from its headquarters in Banjul. Chief Observer Reinhold Lopatka stated the mission aims to contribute to an inclusive, credible, and transparent electoral process.

The observers, from 15 EU member states and Switzerland, will visit different regions to assess the electoral environment. They will engage with election officials, candidates, political parties, civil society, and media. The mission’s core team arrived on October 21 to evaluate the political and legal framework. Lopatka noted that the EU does not certify election results, which remains the responsibility of The Gambia's Independent Electoral Commission.

A further 20 short-term observers and a seven-member European Parliament delegation will join before election day. The EU mission will stay until the process is complete, with Lopatka set to present preliminary findings two days after the vote. The EU EOM was invited by Gambian authorities to observe the polls.
