Gambia launches hub for 20 returning migrants
Kanifing Municipal Council opens a resilience center offering business support, childcare, and psychosocial services.
The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) launched the Kanifing Migrant Resilience Hub on October 29, 2026, to help 20 returning migrants rebuild their lives. Supported by the Mayors Migration Council's Global Cities Fund 2025, the Hub will connect returnees with services and opportunities for sustainable reintegration.
Lord Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda stated the initiative addresses the "painful reality" of young people leaving Gambia via the "backway" due to a lack of opportunity. He praised the diverse business ideas from participants, including waste collection, delivery services, tailoring, and catering, highlighting their potential to create jobs and boost the local economy.
The Hub provides on-site childcare and psychosocial support to enable participants to focus on their enterprises. KMC aims to strengthen collaboration with stakeholders like Startup Incubator Gambia to create lasting opportunities for returnees and build an inclusive community.
Why it mattersReturning migrants in Kanifing will receive support to start businesses and reintegrate into the local economy.
