Guinea dismisses 22 officials over illegal gold mining

President Mamadi Doumbouya removed territorial administrators and officers for facilitating clandestine gold extraction.

Guinea's President Mamadi Doumbouya permanently dismissed 22 territorial administrators and officers on November 3, 2026. These officials, stationed in the Siguiri region, were sanctioned for aiding and covering up illegal gold mining activities. The government cited major land destruction and water pollution as reasons for the dismissals.

Mohamed-Hady Barry, a mining law specialist, described the action as a restoration of state authority. He noted that the dismissed officials included the acting governor, Colonel Fayimba Mara, and several prefects and sub-prefects. Barry called for judicial proceedings to establish criminal responsibility.

The decree, which involved five key ministries, marks a break from past tolerance of administrative misconduct. The affected officials' actions led to the destruction of agricultural land and chemical poisoning of regional water sources.
