First body recovered from Nairobi building collapse
16 people remain missing after an 18-storey building collapsed in Nairobi's Eastleigh district.
Rescue teams recovered the first body on Friday from the rubble of an 18-storey building that collapsed a week ago in Nairobi, with 16 people still missing.
The body of a woman was found crushed beneath concrete and steel at the construction site in Eastleigh, a busy commercial district. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja stated the building lacked required construction permits and had illegal commercial rentals before inspection.
Families have gathered at the site for a week, but hopes of finding survivors have faded after the critical 72-hour window passed, with no survivors rescued since Saturday.
