Liberia enrolls 409 volunteer teachers on payroll

Monrovia Consolidated School System classes resume after government commits to address salary and welfare issues.

Academic activities have resumed at the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) after the Liberian government committed to resolving teachers' grievances. The government enrolled an additional 201 volunteer teachers, bringing the total formally enrolled to 409. Outstanding salaries are also being disbursed as part of the resolution.

MCSS Superintendent Dr. Augurie E. Stevens announced the resumption on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, thanking stakeholders for constructive dialogue. She stated that the enrollment addresses the plight of educators who served without full employment benefits. The decision follows recent protests by teachers and students over unresolved issues.

The government's commitment, supported by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai's administration, aims to find permanent solutions for public school teachers. Education advocates stress the need for sustained attention to prevent future disruptions. The priority for students and families remains uninterrupted learning and a stable education system.
