Liberia receives 30 road machines for farming
Bong County's new heavy equipment aims to improve market access for farmers and rural families.
30 heavy earthmoving machines have arrived in Bong County, Liberia, to improve rural infrastructure. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel King Urey Yarkpawolo stated that these machines are intended for construction work that could connect farmers to markets and improve the lives of rural families.
Dr. Yarkpawolo, a native of Zota District, emphasized that passable roads are essential for food security and farm income, directly impacting rural households. He commended President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for placing roads at the center of his administration’s agenda, which he believes will alleviate transportation issues hindering agriculture and trade in Bong County.
The EPA chief explained that poor roads cause harvested crops like rice and cassava to spoil before reaching markets, leading to farmer losses. He added that improved roads can help children reach school and patients reach hospitals, and enable businesses to reach new customers.
Why it mattersFarmers in Bong County will benefit from improved road access to sell their produce and earn income, while rural families will see better access to food, education, and healthcare.
