Liberia leader questions war court political will
The head of the War and Economic Crimes Court establishment office doubts legislative and executive commitment to justice.
The head of Liberia's Office for the Establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court, Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu, expressed doubts on November 4, 2026, about the political will to establish the court. He spoke during a three-day fast and prayer organized by Liberian women in Sinkor, Monrovia.
Barbu stated that lawmakers had promised constituent consultations during a legislative break but he had seen no public demonstration of these. He also questioned President Joseph Nyuma Boakai's commitment, recalling campaign promises for justice for civil war victims and survivors.
The proposed court aims to prosecute individuals for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during Liberia's civil conflicts. The women's prayer event highlights ongoing public demands for the court's establishment beyond political assurances.
