Lebona Lephema considers new party formation

Disgruntled tycoon Lebona Lephema may form a new political party if his bid to oust RFP deputy leader fails.

Business tycoon Lebona Lephema is considering forming a new political party and leaving the Revolution for Prosperity (RFP). Lephema, a founding member of the RFP, has been consulting with disgruntled members of the All Basotho Convention (ABC), including former minister Chalane Phori and ex-secretary-general Lebohang Hlaele.

Lephema fell out with Prime Minister Sam Matekane after resisting a ministry split and refusing redeployment to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Business Development in April. He was dismissed from Cabinet in May. Lephema also believes he is entitled to the RFP deputy leadership, which he sees as a step to succeeding Matekane.

His ambition to oust current RFP deputy leader Nthomeng Majara has reportedly divided the party. Majara has the backing of Prime Minister Matekane. Lephema's potential departure follows his earlier dismissal from Cabinet after resisting redeployment.
