Mafeteng Hospital sued M2 million for alleged negligence

A patient claims faecal matter leaked into his body after a seven-day wait for medical attention post-surgery.

Mafeteng Hospital faces a M2 million lawsuit for alleged medical negligence after a patient claimed a botched surgery left faecal matter leaking from his intestines. Teboho Rammusi alleges he received no medical attention for seven days following stomach surgery in December 2024, before being transferred to Tšepong Hospital and later Bloemfontein, South Africa.

In court papers filed in the High Court, Rammusi accuses the hospital of failing to provide adequate care and qualified practitioners. He cites the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, the Minister of Health, the Medical Superintendent of Mafeteng Hospital, and the Attorney General as respondents. Rammusi claims the hospital's medical superintendent failed to ensure a skilled practitioner was always available.

Rammusi claims the alleged negligence resulted in additional medical expenses, a severe lung infection, and pain and suffering. He argues the government is liable as Mafeteng Hospital is state-owned and its officers acted within their employment scope. Doctors at Tšepong Hospital reportedly discovered faecal matter had spilled into his abdominal cavity.
