Standard Bank plants 2000 trees in Mafeteng

The bank partnered with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to boost conservation and biodiversity in Ha-Khojane.

Standard Bank (SLB) and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry planted 2000 trees in Ha-Khojane, Mafeteng District on Thursday. This initiative is part of SLB's commitment of M750,000 over three years to Lesotho's reforestation efforts, which began in 2024.

Makeke Bereng from the Ministry of Environment stated that trees play a vital role in maintaining environmental balance, regulating climatic conditions, and improving air quality. Keketso Makara of SLB added that the planting is part of the bank's Blue Roots programme, aiming to plant one million trees across Africa, building on previous plantings of 54,000 trees in Mohale’s Hoek.

Ha-Khojane headwoman ’Makhojane Khojane believes the trees will help restore the area’s environment, create a habitat for biodiversity, and bring back traditional medicinal plants for future generations.

Why it mattersThe tree planting aims to improve the local environment, potentially reintroducing medicinal plants and attracting wildlife.
