Moroccan diesel prices rise, tomato costs exceed MAD 12

Consumers face higher fuel and food costs as November begins, with wholesale tomato prices reaching MAD 9 per kilogram.

Moroccan consumers began November with increased diesel prices, which rose by up to one dirham per liter, nearing MAD 17 at some stations. Gasoline prices saw a slight decrease. Tomatoes sold for over MAD 12 a kilogram in certain markets, adding to existing food inflation.

Abderrazak Chabi, president of the Casablanca Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Traders Association, cited declining seasonal production, delayed harvests, and unfavorable weather as causes for high tomato prices. He suggested suspending or restricting tomato exports to address domestic shortages. However, producers dispute this, pointing to plant disease, expensive inputs, and weak yields as the primary issues.

Aziz El Maanaoui, president of the Chtouka Agricultural Producers Association, stated that export earnings help producers cover rising costs and maintain domestic supply. He reported wholesale tomato prices ranging from MAD 3 to MAD 10 per kilogram based on quality. Chabi anticipates tomato prices may decrease by the end of November with new market supplies.
