Morocco opens Nador West Med container terminal

The new East Terminal features 1,520 metres of quay and aims for 3.5 million TEUs annual capacity by 2030.

Morocco has started operations at the East Terminal of Nador West Med, a port and industrial complex that has drawn 54 billion dirhams (US$5.5 billion) in investment. The East Terminal alone required 5 billion dirhams (US$510 million) and includes 1,520 metres of quay with an 18-metre draft.

The terminal is expected to reach an annual capacity of 3.5 million TEUs by 2030, according to the Ministry of Equipment and Water. A consortium of Marsa Maroc and Terminal Investment Limited will operate the facility for 25 years.

Additional terminals for general cargo, bulk cargo, and roll-on/roll-off units are planned, alongside energy infrastructure including an LNG terminal. This development is part of Morocco’s national port strategy targeting 390 million tons total port capacity by 2030.

Why it mattersMorocco's new port facilities will support industrial activity and reduce reliance on other ports for fuel imports.
