Madagascar seizes Enelec power plant in Toamasina

Government takes control of thermal plant for two years to fix electricity shortages and underproduction.

The Malagasy state has officially requisitioned the Enelec thermal power plant in Toamasina for up to 24 months. The decree, issued on November 3, places the plant's personnel, facilities, and services under state control, with production now managed by Jirama. A government delegation, including the Minister of Energy and Hydrocarbons, formally notified Enelec officials in Toamasina.

This action follows persistent electricity supply disruptions in Toamasina, where the Enelec plant's production has reportedly fallen to 14 megawatts from its contracted 32 megawatts. The government's decision came after previous warnings to Enelec regarding electrical issues in Toamasina and other cities. Enelec had cited technical failures as the cause for its reduced output.

The state's seizure of the plant aims to ensure the continuity of public service and improve electricity supply in the economic capital. The government intends to bring more production capacity online to reduce recurring power outages that affect daily life and economic activities in the port city.

Why it mattersResidents and businesses in Toamasina will experience improved electricity supply and reduced power outages.
