Malian fashion show highlights traditional clothing

The sixth Koko Fashion Show in Bamako will showcase traditional Malian attire and craftsmanship.

The sixth Koko Fashion Show is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, at the Bamako International Conference Centre. The event, themed "Preserving Traditions," aims to highlight Malian clothing heritage, local craftsmanship, and foster connections with the sub-region and diaspora. Organized by KOKO Fashion, the show will feature traditional fabrics like bogolan and bazin, emphasizing their cultural significance and commercial potential in contemporary fashion.

Fatoumata Sanogo, the general coordinator, stated the event seeks to delve deeper into Malian cultural roots and celebrate tradition. The fashion show is intended to increase the visibility of Malian creations internationally, potentially boosting sales and creating opportunities for artisans, dyers, and designers. Organizers also stressed the importance of passing down this heritage to younger generations, viewing traditional clothing as suitable for both daily wear and formal occasions.

The event will include a red carpet inspired by the Met Gala, encouraging guests to wear outfits reflecting local traditions and skills. The red carpet begins at four o'clock, with a television broadcast starting at five thirty. For the first time, the show will be broadcast live on TM1, allowing a wider audience to follow the event, especially via social media. Delegations from Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Gabon, the United States, and France are expected to attend.
