Somelec blames technicians for Nouakchott power pole fires

Mauritania's electricity company cites unqualified climbers, poor cables, and illegal connections for recurrent fires.

The Mauritanian electricity company, Somelec, stated that unqualified external technicians, low-quality cables, and illegal connections caused repeated fires on power poles in Nouakchott. These practices lead to short circuits when network load and pressure increase, exceeding the capacity of poles and transformers.

Somelec announced a campaign to remove illegal connections and regularize those on the capital's electricity network. The company urged citizens to help protect the network and warned of risks to lives, property, and residential security.

Nouakchott has recently experienced frequent fires in electrical installations, including distribution posts and technical rooms. Somelec attributed these incidents to electrical overload and rising temperatures.
