Mozambique ruby auction raises $214,000
The first domestic ruby sale attracted 12 companies and concluded with four bids at Nacala International Airport.
Mozambique's first domestic ruby auction generated just over $214,000 from the sale of two rough ruby lots. The event, held at Nacala International Airport under police guard, saw 12 companies inspect the stones, with four submitting bids. Zambrock Mining and Exploration, owned by Belmiro Mize Lampiao, secured the two ruby lots after their bids surpassed initial offers.
Two corundum lots failed to sell as bids fell below their reserve prices and will be offered again at a later date. This auction, though modest compared to international sales, demonstrated Mozambique's capability to host such events with necessary security and procedures. Ethiopian Airlines is set to begin serving Nacala three times weekly from tomorrow, aiming to connect buyers to the region.
The auction occurred during the CAVAME-d conference, which the government intends to develop into an annual Mozambique Mining and Energy Week. The conference announced $4.2bn in investment, which will be assessed based on completed transactions. Next year's gathering will track the progress of these proposals.
Why it mattersThe auction directly affects Mozambican mining companies and the local economy through business transactions.
