Nigerians honored for local resource development

World Food Programme and FAO celebrate rural men and women as builders of food sovereignty.

In Niamey on October 28, 2026, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), with Niger's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, recognized rural men and women for their work in developing local resources. An exhibition titled 'Faces of Resilience in Niger' showcased these individuals, attended by government members and guests.

Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Col. Bilaly El Hadj Gambobo, stated these individuals are not just people to be helped but are farmers, herders, processors, and entrepreneurs who possess generational knowledge, innovate with limited means, and create income. He emphasized their role as the primary builders of Niger's food sovereignty and the strength of its people.

WFP Representative in Niger, Guy Adoua, added that resilience in Niger is a daily lived experience, seen in farmers restoring degraded land and mothers working for a better future. He highlighted that these individuals are the primary actors of their own resilience, not merely beneficiaries of interventions.

Why it mattersRural men and women in Niger are being recognized for their active role in building the country's food sovereignty and resilience.
