ADC says Atiku won't pick Senate President, Speaker
Dino Melaye stated the African Democratic Congress will allow lawmakers to elect their own leaders for independence.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council's Deputy Director-General, Dino Melaye, stated that a presidency under Atiku Abubakar would not dictate the selection of the Senate President or the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Melaye announced on Arise Television that the ADC party is committed to democratic principles and will permit lawmakers to choose their leaders independently. This approach, he explained, aims to foster legislative independence and enhance the National Assembly's oversight capabilities over the executive branch.
Melaye specified that the ADC would empower relevant National Assembly committees, including those for Establishment, Finance, and Budget and Planning, to scrutinize government spending. These committees will be tasked with questioning government officials and monitoring expenditure, particularly concerning State House operations. The ADC official emphasized that this independent selection of leaders would strengthen the National Assembly's oversight functions.
Separately, Tijjani Kaura was declared the winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) rerun senatorial primary election for Zamfara North. This primary followed violence at voting centers, and Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura was announced as the victor ahead of the 2027 elections.
Why it mattersNigerian lawmakers will have the freedom to elect their leaders without presidential interference, according to Dino Melaye of the ADC.
