Jigawa commits N4.5bn to cattle ranches
The state plans three ranches with modern facilities to boost livestock and reduce farmer-herder conflicts.
The Jigawa State Government has committed N4.5 billion to establish three cattle ranches across the state. The Commissioner for Livestock Development, Salim Abdulrahman, announced the funding, which is part of the N17.2 billion allocated to livestock development in the 2026 fiscal year. The ranches will be located in Sankara Grazing Reserve (Ringim), Kashamai Grazing Reserve (Kafin Hausa), and Kukar Mekiya (Kiyawa).
Each 510-hectare ranch will accommodate 3,000 households and feature modern facilities including pasture, water points, schools, healthcare, veterinary clinics, markets, electricity, and water supply. Abdulrahman stated the initiative aims to combat frequent clashes between farmers and herders in Jigawa. The government also plans veterinary clinics in all 27 local government areas and mobile clinics across the state.
The state has earmarked N350 million for livestock vaccination and is upgrading three livestock breeding centres. MACBAN National Deputy Treasurer Abdullahi Abubakar supported the transition to modern ranching, suggesting it could reduce land and resource competition that triggers disputes.
