ADC urges ECOWAS to warn Nigeria on election crisis
Senator David Mark asked the regional bloc to caution the Federal Government and INEC against actions that could trigger poll conflict.
The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, asked the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Thursday to warn Nigeria’s Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against actions that could cause a crisis over the 2027 general elections.
Mark made the appeal in Abuja while receiving an ECOWAS delegation on a pre-election fact-finding mission, stating that the credibility of Nigeria’s elections is vital for peace in West Africa. The ADC has raised concerns about INEC’s preparedness, alleged government control of institutions, and threats of violence, according to the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.
The Head of the ECOWAS Mission, former Sierra Leone Vice-President Mr Victor Bockarie Foh, said the delegation would report the ADC’s concerns to the regional body. The mission is assessing Nigeria’s election preparedness and the political atmosphere, noting that peace in Nigeria is important to the West African region.
Why it mattersThe ADC warns that the Federal Government and INEC must ensure a free, fair, and transparent 2027 general election to prevent electoral conflict in Nigeria.
