Police arrest two masquerades for extortion in Akwa Ibom

Suspects allegedly terrorized residents and assaulted women while demanding money.

Police in Akwa Ibom State arrested two Ekpo masquerade participants on Monday, October 26, for allegedly extorting money and assaulting the public in Ikot Ekpene. The arrests occurred along the Ukana/Abak highway around 6pm.

State police spokesperson Timfom John identified the suspects as Ine Isong, 29, and Emmanuel Ekpenyong, 20, who were found with masquerade costumes, machetes, spears, and arrows. Preliminary reports suggest the suspects terrorized residents and assaulted people, particularly women, while extorting money.

Investigations are ongoing to identify other involved individuals, according to John. The Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, warned that cultural practices would not be used to cover criminality and that the command would ensure residents' peace and security.
