Nigeria cocoa exports to US jump 554%

Shipments reached $142 million in 2025, up from $21.7 million the previous year, according to the US Mission in Nigeria.

Nigeria's cocoa bean exports to the United States surged by 554.4% to $142 million in 2025, a significant increase from $21.7 million in 2024. The United States Mission in Nigeria announced these figures, highlighting growing trade between the two nations.

The mission stated that US demand for Nigerian cocoa is booming, with exports to the United States rising sharply. This growth in trade occurs as Nigeria aims to diversify its foreign exchange earnings and boost agricultural production.

Despite the export surge, Nigeria's cocoa industry faces challenges including old plantations, limited financing, and low productivity. Over 80% of Nigeria's cocoa is exported raw, limiting local value addition and job creation.

Why it mattersNigerian farmers and businesses are seeing increased demand for their cocoa beans in the United States, but structural issues hinder the sector's full potential.
