Rwanda, Benin, Ghana Link Digital ID Systems for Cross-Border Testing

Smart Africa's platform connects national digital identity systems, enabling travelers to use IDs across borders for services and travel.

Rwanda, Benin, and Ghana are preparing to test a shared platform, the Smart Africa Data Exchange (SADX), designed to verify digital identities issued by one country to citizens of another. The platform has already integrated the three nations' national ID systems, with real-world trials planned but not yet dated. Initial tests will focus on verifying identities for travelers between Benin and Rwanda by air, and between Ghana and Benin at land borders.

The initiative, announced by Smart Africa on X, aims to create a seamless and secure way for Africans to use their digital identities across borders for purposes such as travel, work, and accessing services. SADX operates under the Smart Africa Trust Alliance (SATA), which promotes trusted identity checks and personal data sharing among member countries while allowing each nation to retain control over its own digital identity infrastructure.

Technical meetings in Kigali earlier this year laid the groundwork for this integration, addressing infrastructure linkage, trust mechanisms via public key infrastructure, and the use of application programming interfaces for data exchange. The upcoming trials will assess the secure and reliable cross-border verification capabilities of these interconnected systems, with wider rollout contingent on trial results and government agreements.

Why it mattersFarmers may benefit from easier access to services or inputs if digital identity systems streamline cross-border trade and administrative processes.
