Rwanda Shuts 250 Alcohol Factories for Substandard Production

Health Minister Nsanzimana stated 250 factories were closed for producing substandard alcoholic drinks, with 200 more awaiting licenses.

Rwanda has closed 250 factories producing substandard alcoholic drinks, locally known as ibyuma, with an additional 200 businesses that applied for licenses not yet operational, according to Health Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana. He noted that the production of these drinks expanded during the Covid-19 pandemic, with some producers switching from bananas to ethanol mixed with powdered flavorings due to rising banana prices. Authorities intervened to halt operations at the 250 identified substandard factories.

The minister clarified that the 200 businesses awaiting licenses are distinct from those already producing the drinks. While some producers were reportedly operating without any licenses, a specific figure was not provided. Nsanzimana advised those affected by the closures and restrictions to explore alternative business ventures, such as food processing, non-alcoholic beverages, nutritious products, and agriculture.

During a meeting of the National Consultative Forum of Political Organisations, representatives questioned the licensing process, specifically how so many factories obtained permits from the government agency responsible for regulating medicines and food products. The forum aimed to address concerns surrounding the proliferation and regulation of such businesses within the country.
