Rwanda farmers urged to innovate against climate change

Minister Ndabamenye calls for new methods to secure food and livestock production from weather threats.

Rwanda's farmers must adopt innovative agricultural methods to counter threats to food and livestock production from changing weather patterns. Agriculture and Animal Resources Minister Dr Telesphore Ndabamenye made this call on Friday, October 30, during World Food Day celebrations in Gatsibo District.

Minister Ndabamenye urged farmers to increase productivity for household consumption and market supply, identifying climate change as a major challenge. He advised adopting farming techniques that reduce reliance on rainfall and prepare for disasters.

Farmers were also encouraged to follow best practices like timely planting, correct fertiliser application, and proper harvesting and storage to minimize losses. Livestock farmers should ensure sufficient animal feed and consider crop and livestock insurance.
