Rwanda hosts climate talks marking Kigali Amendment anniversary
Experts and officials gather in Kigali to assess progress and plan future actions for ozone protection and greenhouse gas reduction.
Rwanda is hosting a technical workshop in Kigali to mark the 10th anniversary of the Kigali Amendment, bringing together government officials, climate experts, and international partners. The meeting, which runs alongside the 38th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (MOP38) from November 2 to 6, 2026, focuses on strengthening global efforts to protect the ozone layer and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Environment Minister Dr. Bernadette Arakwiye emphasized the need to translate commitments into practical climate action, stating, "Rwanda is proud to welcome the world back to Kigali, 10 years after countries came together here to adopt the Kigali Amendment." The Kigali Amendment, adopted on October 15, 2016, aims to gradually reduce the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which contribute significantly to global warming.
Full implementation of the amendment is projected to prevent up to 0.5 degrees Celsius of global warming by the end of the century. Discussions at the workshop are expected to lead to stronger implementation strategies, increased investment in climate-friendly cooling technologies, and improved refrigerant management, potentially benefiting food preservation, healthcare, and creating new economic opportunities through initiatives like the African Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Cooling and Cold-chain (ACES).
Why it mattersRwanda is hosting international discussions on climate action and the reduction of greenhouse gases, directly involving its environment minister and local institutions.
