Three bodies recovered from disused Ruhango mine

Rwanda Investigation Bureau probes deaths after men entered abandoned Big Mining shaft without authorisation.

Three bodies were recovered from a disused underground section of Big Mining in Ruhango District, Rwanda, eight days after the men entered the site. The deceased were aged 29, 34, and 36.

The Rwanda National Police Fire and Rescue Brigade retrieved the bodies, which were taken for examination. CIP Hassan Kamanzi, police spokesperson for Southern Province, stated the men entered without authorization and that the guard responsible for the site has been arrested for investigation by the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).

Big Mining Managing Director Eugène Shumbusho confirmed the men were not employees and alleged they were stealing minerals, adding the company is assisting with burial arrangements. Shumbusho noted the incident highlights security lapses and that Big Mining will hire more qualified guards and provide additional training.
