Sudan lifts ban on 46 imports amid rising inflation

The Sudanese currency reached SDG 10,300 against the dollar as annual inflation hit 28.29%.

Sudan has lifted import restrictions on 46 goods as the dollar climbed to SDG 10,300 and annual inflation reached 28.29%. Sovereignty Council chairman Abdelfattah El Burhan cancelled a cabinet decision that had banned these imports, aiming to ease pressure on consumers struggling with soaring food prices.

Finance minister Jibril Ibrahim stated the decision considers consumer needs while protecting domestic producers. Traders reported an immediate price fall for some goods following the announcement. The National Importers’ Chamber welcomed the move but requested a clear cancellation of Resolution No. 74, which had imposed the ban and caused losses.

Foreign-exchange dealers reported the dollar rose to SDG 10,200 for buying and SDG 10,300 for selling on Thursday, an increase of SDG 100. Annual inflation rose to 28.29% in September from 26.14% in August, with food and drink prices up 36.81% annually.
