Senegal court seeks one year jail for student death

A military court in Dakar heard the case of Fallou Sène, who died in 2018 clashes at Gaston Berger University.

A military court in Dakar has heard the case of Fallou Sène, who died eight years ago during student protests at Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis. Prosecutors requested a one-year prison sentence for Captain Serigne Moustapha Sané, who was a lieutenant at the time of the incident. The court will deliver its verdict on November 27.

The incident occurred on May 15, 2018, when a protest over scholarship payments turned violent after gendarmes intervened. Captain Sané admitted to firing the shot that killed Fallou Sène, stating he acted to protect his superior who was being attacked by protesters. Student testimonies presented in court, however, contradicted the defense's account.

The prosecution argued the actions constituted voluntary assault resulting in death without intent to kill, seeking a one-year jail term. Lawyers for Fallou Sène's family demanded 200 million CFA francs in damages, while student representatives sought 50 million CFA francs. Defense lawyers argued for acquittal, citing necessity and the need to maintain order amidst violent clashes where gendarmes also sustained injuries.

Why it mattersThe court's decision will determine the legal accountability for the death of student Fallou Sène and potential compensation for his family.
