Senegal Workers Mobilize for Three-Day General Strike

Hundreds of Senegalese workers marched in Dakar, signaling a 72-hour general strike set to begin Wednesday despite government appeals.

Hundreds of Senegalese workers took to the streets of Dakar on Tuesday afternoon, responding to a call from the Front national pour la défense du travail (FSDT). This mobilization precedes a planned 72-hour general strike commencing Wednesday. The FSDT, a collective representing 13 unions, is proceeding with the strike despite government efforts to dissuade them from their industrial action.

The strike action is also impacting the national electricity company, Senelec, where the SUTELEC union is maintaining pressure for October 21, 22, and 23. SUTELEC has denounced intimidation tactics by Senelec's general management. In response, Senelec has assured its customers that all necessary measures are in place to ensure the continuity and quality of electricity service, though specific details on these measures remain undisclosed.

Senelec stated its commitment to social dialogue and finding agreed-upon solutions within legal frameworks. This follows a company note from October 19, where management claimed no formal strike notice had been received from SUTELEC, with knowledge of the strike intention coming through unofficial channels. The company reminded staff of labor code regulations regarding strike notices and potential sanctions.

Why it mattersWorkers are striking for better conditions, potentially impacting their livelihoods and job security.
