Judiciary to rule on deadly clashes at Akol Koor's residence

A South Sudanese court will deliver a judgment on Monday regarding a lawsuit filed by victims of a November 2024 gunfight.

The Judiciary is set to deliver a judgment on Monday in a lawsuit filed against the Ministry of Defence concerning the November 2024 armed confrontation at General Akol Koor’s residence in Juba. The case originates from a deadly gunfight on November 21, 2024, involving South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) guarding the former intelligence chief. The confrontation erupted after a disagreement between security personnel guarding the residence and forces tasked with relocating General Koor.

The incident resulted in four deaths, including two soldiers and two civilians, according to army spokesperson Major General Lul Ruai Koang. Two civilians were reportedly crushed by an armoured personnel carrier, and two law students were killed in the crossfire, stated Member of Parliament Mary Nyarieka Lorjok. Juba Teaching Hospital confirmed treating 10 wounded civilians, some with bullet injuries, who were later transferred to Juba Military Hospital.

President Salva Kiir established an investigation committee to assess casualties and damage following the confrontation. The army also requested injured civilians, families of the deceased, and those with damaged property to report to military headquarters with documentation for the inquiry. The lawsuit against the Ministry of Defence is expected to address claims stemming from the incident.
