The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards (SSNBS) praised Juba County authorities for arresting eight employees of H Brothers General Trading and Investment Company Limited on October 25. The employees are accused of repackaging expired maize flour for resale in Gumbo. County authorities conducted an operation on Saturday and found employees transferring the flour into new sacks.
The company’s storage facilities were closed and the eight employees detained pending legal proceedings, according to a statement from the Office of the Caretaker Commissioner. A company manager disputed the allegations, claiming the products were unexpired wheat flour affected by heat and had been previously inspected by the SSNBS. The manager stated that videos from the operation did not clearly show expiry dates.
The SSNBS urged businesses to comply with food safety regulations and improve stock management, emphasizing the need to segregate expired products. The Bureau also called for strengthened cooperation between county authorities, public health institutions, and law enforcement to prevent unsafe products from circulating.
