UK gives South Sudan $2.8 million for flood preparedness
Funding will support early flood preparedness and response activities in Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile states.
The United Kingdom has provided 2.8 million US dollars to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) for flood preparedness in South Sudan. This funding targets vulnerable communities in Jonglei, Unity and Upper Nile states, which face increasing threats from climate-related disasters like floods and drought.
The programme will deliver early-warning information, cash assistance, livelihood support, and emergency supplies to help families safeguard their food, livestock, and assets. Sebastian Fouquet, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s Development Director in South Sudan, stated that climate shocks worsen the country’s humanitarian situation, and acting on early warnings helps families protect their resources.
The initiative, running until March 2027, will also strengthen community-based early-warning systems and coordinate with government authorities. This contribution brings the UK's total funding for El Niño-related early action in South Sudan to over £2.85 million, aiming to reduce losses and protect livelihoods before disasters strike.
