Sao Tome and Principe statistics agency surveys businesses

The National Statistics Institute is collecting data on sales and economic outlook from companies and market vendors.

The National Statistics Institute (INE) began a qualitative survey on Tuesday, November 3, in the Autonomous Region of Príncipe to assess economic activity and business trends across Sao Tome and Principe. The survey, which started on October 15, targets companies, shops, service providers, and market vendors to gather information on sales, product commercialization, and economic forecasts for the coming months.

Antónia Sousa, head of the INE's Economic and Financial Statistics Department, explained that the collected data will enable comparisons of commercial activity between periods, identify trends, and evaluate the business environment. The INE aims to understand if economic activities are improving, stable, or worsening, and to identify key business challenges like financing issues and the rising cost of living. 10 surveyors are involved, with eight focusing on establishments and services and two on market vendors in Bobô Forro.

The INE also maintains monthly teams collecting product and price information from businesses and services to calculate inflation. Sousa emphasized the need for collaboration from businesses and vendors for the quality and reliability of statistical data. This survey compares the first half of 2026 with the same period in 2025 and looks at prospects for the end of the year.
