Sao Tome and Principe to get first neurosurgeon

Elyane Neto, 26, returns to Russia for specialized neurosurgery training to address a critical need.

Sao Tome and Principe will have its first neurosurgeon within three years, identified as 26-year-old Elyane Neto. After seven years of general medical training in Moscow, Neto volunteered for two months at the Ayres de Menezes Central Hospital. She departs this Thursday for Russia to pursue specialized neurosurgery training.

Neto stated her interest in the central nervous system and the brain, calling it a significant challenge and a specialty absent in the country. She noted the lack of adequate care for patients with neurological issues like strokes and head trauma from motorcycle accidents. A group of eight Russian specialists recently assisted the hospital, performing dozens of surgeries.

Neto comes from a family of medical professionals, including her father, older brother, aunt, and sister-in-law. Her two-month voluntary internship highlighted the need for neurosurgical expertise, particularly for young patients suffering from strokes or head injuries. The hospital currently lacks this specialized medical service.

Why it mattersSao Tome and Principe citizens needing neurosurgery will soon have access to local expertise.
