Eswatini votes on Africa Cup of Nations schedule
The Confederation of African Football is consulting its 54 member associations on tournament frequency.
Eswatini is among the 54 member associations consulted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) schedule. CAF has formally requested member federations' official stances on returning the tournament to a two-year format. National federations must submit their positions by Wednesday, October 28.
CAF cited financial concerns as a reason for potentially shifting AFCON to a four-year cycle, which would necessitate another revenue-generating competition like the proposed Africa Nations League. CAF President Patrice Motsepe had previously indicated a move to a four-year cycle starting in 2028, but the debate has been reopened for direct member input.
A biannual AFCON schedule historically provides regular competitive action and player exposure, while a four-year cycle aligns with the global calendar and may reduce friction with European clubs. However, retaining the two-year cycle ensures consistent television rights, sponsorship revenue, and financial distributions for member associations.
Why it mattersEswatini's football association is participating in a CAF vote that will determine the financial and competitive future of the Africa Cup of Nations.
