Togo consumers reject higher utility tariffs

The LCT demands a halt to potential price hikes for water and electricity amid frequent power cuts.

The League of Consumers of Togo (LCT) is protesting against recurring electricity outages and the possibility of increased water and electricity tariffs. The LCT is calling for a suspension of any price hikes and for national consultations to address these essential services.

Frequent power interruptions are damaging appliances and causing losses for households and businesses, according to the LCT. These cuts also increase expenses for generators and disrupt essential services like health centers and schools, while consumers are not compensated for the service failures.

The LCT recalls that a 12.5% tariff increase in March 2025 was partially suspended after public outcry. They insist that any future price adjustments must involve genuine consultation with all stakeholders, especially as the cost of living continues to rise.

Why it mattersTogolese consumers face deteriorating conditions due to frequent power cuts and potential price increases for essential services like water and electricity.
