Togo party welcomes ECOWAS court letter on constitutional order

The Santé du Peuple party urged a swift return to the 1992 constitution, rejecting academic discussions.

The Santé du Peuple party in Togo, led by Dr Georges WILLIAM-KOUESSAN, has welcomed a letter sent on October 23, 2026, by the ECOWAS Court of Justice to the Togolese Minister of Justice. This letter demands the execution of the court's January 29, 2026 ruling, which declared unconstitutional a constitutional change made two years prior.

In a statement dated October 30, 2026, the party expressed satisfaction with the ECOWAS court's action. They are calling on Togolese authorities for a "rapid and peaceful" return to the 1992 constitutional order. The party also stated that academic discussions cannot resolve the current crisis.

The Santé du Peuple party's reaction follows the ECOWAS court's demand for the enforcement of its January 29, 2026, ruling. The party believes this ruling invalidates the constitutional changes implemented in Togo over the past two years.

Why it mattersTogolese citizens are affected by the call for a return to the 1992 constitutional order and the rejection of recent constitutional changes.
