Uganda arrests retired general Peter Elwelu over subversive activities

Military says 15 guns and fatigues were recovered from the UPDF officer who was on the run in Soroti City.

Retired UPDF officer General Peter Elwelu was arrested in Soroti City on Monday evening for alleged subversive activities and plans to destabilize the Teso region. UPDF spokesperson Colonel Chris Magezi confirmed the arrest on X, stating Elwelu had been on the run. Security forces recovered 15 guns, military fatigues, and two pickup trucks linked to him.

Colonel Magezi described Elwelu as a "renegade UPDF officer" who will face charges and prosecution in court. The military announced the arrest after a weeks-long manhunt, with Elwelu's home in Kalaki District reportedly abandoned and guarded by security operatives.

Elwelu, who previously served as Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, built a significant military career before his arrest. Details regarding his court appearance and specific charges were not immediately available as of Monday evening, with security tightened in Soroti City.
