UTH water project reaches 70 percent completion

The K69.7 million project aims to ensure reliable water supply and prevent infections at the hospital.

The University Teaching Hospitals (UTH) water supply improvement project in Lusaka is 70 percent complete, with remaining works scheduled for December. Minister of Health Roma Chilengi stated that reliable water is vital in health facilities to avoid disrupting services and prevent infections like cholera.

Professor Chilengi emphasized the government's commitment to resolving UTH's water challenges for a safe and hygienic patient environment. He noted that water is a fundamental human right and essential for patient care, sanitation, and cleaning in hospitals.

The project was initiated after the 2023 cholera outbreak highlighted the need for better water and sanitation infrastructure. The Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation engaged Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company in late 2023 to assess and recommend improvements for UTH's water system.

Why it mattersPatients at the University Teaching Hospitals will receive care in a safer and more hygienic environment due to improved water supply.
