Zambia proposes K284.8 billion budget for growth

The 2027 national budget targets increased electricity generation, agricultural output, mining, and tourism.

Zambia's proposed K284.8 billion budget for 2027 prioritises production and infrastructure growth, shifting focus from economic stabilisation to accelerated expansion. Households receiving Social Cash Transfers are set to benefit directly, with funding for the programme rising to K10.4 billion, extending coverage to over 1.6 million households. Other Zambians' gains will depend on public services, market access, and taxes paid.

The budget allocates K68.5 billion to education and health, representing 24 percent of proposed expenditure. School feeding programmes receive an increase from K523 million to K1 billion. Health services will see K6.4 billion earmarked for drugs and medical supplies, aiming to reduce out-of-pocket expenses for patients. A K5.2 billion allocation is also intended to expedite pension payments for retired public servants.

Agriculture, fisheries, and livestock are allocated K22.7 billion, including K9.1 billion for the Farmer Input Support Programme to aid smallholders. The K18.1 billion road allocation aims to improve feeder and intra-district routes, enhancing market access for farmers. Selected manufacturers will benefit from increased customs duty on ceramic tiles and exemptions on raw materials for sanitary product production. Tourism operators stand to benefit from proposed duty suspensions on safari vehicles and hospitality equipment.

Why it mattersThe budget aims to boost economic growth through increased production and infrastructure development, directly benefiting households receiving cash transfers and potentially others through public services and targeted sector support.
