Burkina Faso targets 90% financial inclusion by 2031
The nation aims to mobilize 44.2 billion FCFA to expand access to secure and adapted financial services.
Burkina Faso plans to reach 90% financial inclusion by 2031 through its second National Inclusive Finance Strategy (SNFI 2). This five-year plan, valued at 44.2 billion FCFA, aims to broaden access to financial services, accelerate digitalization, and enhance protection for vulnerable groups, including women and youth. Draft documents for the strategy and its three-year action plan were presented for validation at a national workshop in Ouagadougou on November 6, 2026.
Vieux Abdoul Rachid Soulama, Secretary General of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, stated that the strategy's core purpose is to bring financial services closer to excluded populations. He emphasized that inclusive finance should provide access to quality, secure services that are adapted to people's needs. The initiative seeks to ensure equitable access, considering disparities related to gender, age, social conditions, and vulnerability.
The SNFI 2 strategy builds on the success of the first strategy, which exceeded its target of 75% financial service usage between 2019 and 2023. The new plan aims to enable women to develop businesses, young people to fund entrepreneurial projects, and agricultural producers to secure resources for their campaigns.
Why it mattersBurkina Faso's citizens, particularly women, youth, and vulnerable populations, will gain better access to financial services like credit and savings accounts.
